What is Social Media?

Good day,

My name is Glenn Froehlich and I am an over 40 social media guy. I work with companies and individuals to implements social media into there lives and companies. So I often get the question, what is social media? Here is my definition:

“Any technology that allows people to connect, build relationships and interact”

That is it, plain and simple. I find that there is a bit of a backlash around social media and what it is. Many of the webs social media experts say social media is the new way to communicate and do business. I disagree - it’s the same thing we have always done in our lives and in business, build relationships, trust, engage, service, we just are using different technologies to do it.

Some day as our children’s, children go through the archives at the local museum. There will be in a dusty corner, a beige thing with a round dial, several buttons on the bottom with a small faded sign that reads “first social media tool called, the telephone”

Sue Z. Hart's Gravatar To be honest, I apposed social media until I started doing research for a personal branding presentation. In the research I read an interview with Seth Godin who unbeknown to me is like a guru of the information age. Social media wasn't the impersonal, nag you to death approach to business I thought it was. So... being the wise business person I like to think I am, I paid attention. I had the opportunity to be exposed to what social media really can and should be and I took it. Glenn's presentation helped me to see that social media is just a new tool to do a better job of building on the relationships I feel are the foundation of our business and our personal lives. I love that I now understand I don't have to give up my integrity to do use social media. In fact, I can do a better job of staying engaged, providing service and building trust.

You really owe it to yourself to learn more about social media and I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Old dogs can (and should) learn new tricks!
